Teams of bright businessmen in their 20s and 30s can have a notoriously difficult time communicating with executives in their 50s and 60s.

In the course of running my software company, One Technology, I routinely made presentations and sales calls to clients more than twice my age, developing a skill for communication between parties from different backgrounds:

• distilling proposals into quick messages
• listening attentively to client concerns
• providing necessary detail but not excessive
• distinguishing between respect for legacy practices and reasons for change
• translating exuberant new ideas into the vocabulary of a mature business

Management Consulting firms and small-team startups can both have challenges in these areas, since conflict can arise any time there are disparate people.
